Flat Roofing Introduction To Flat Roofing in Cumbria A flat roof is more than just waterproofing. It has to be properly designed to allow water to drain, be insulated above living areas, correctly detailed at junctions and robust to allow access for building maintenance. We design and fit roofs from the walls upwards all in conjunction with Building Regulations and Codes of Practices and where necessary will have them independently inspected and signed off. We only use products which have good BBA certification, are tried and tested over many years, are only sold to licenced and trained contractors and offer robust warranties. All roofs are different and as experienced contractors we find the correct solution and do not try and make one product fit all. We do not use GRP Fibre Glass products.
Our waterproofing of choice? Single Ply membranes have been used in the UK for well over 40 years as they have a proven track record both on industrial and residential buildings. They are more often than not the architects material of choice as they are only fitted by trained contractors who work closely with the designers and manufacturers. They are made of plasticised PVC which is breathable and makes them perfect for overlaying roofs. They come in varying forms to allow them to be mechanically attached, adhered or laid under balcony tiles or green roofs. We use them on flat, vertical and curved surface and are ideal where you have difficult details to overcome. They are also extremely flexible allowing them to withstand all structural and thermal movement. www.spra.co.uk We also fit built up felt where a single ply cannot be used.
Get in Touch How is your new roof fitted? This depends on the existing structure, insulation requirements and if you are considering paving, decking or a Green Roof.
Mechanically Attached The membrane is attached to the structure using screws and plates and then the next membrane sheet overlaps the line of the join and is heat welded providing for a completely waterproof join which has the additional aesthetic advantage of covering up the line of screws and plates. This is our preferred system as it is quick, can be fitted nearly all year round and allows the structure to move and breath.
Adhered to Plywood The membrane can be partially or fully adhered to plywood, insulation or the existing structure. We would normally adhere when we cannot mechanically attach ie where the roof deck cannot take screws.
Ballasted/Green Roofs
This is where rounded pebbles, decking, paving or a Green Roof is used over the waterproofing. www.sky-garden.co.uk
Go to Green Roofs Vacuum Roofing Only attached at perimeters to an airtight structure and vents strategically positioned throughout. Ideal on larger concrete roofs.
Building Regulations To be considered if your roof decking needs replacing As of the 1st October 2010 all roofs which need replacing have to be brought up to current Building Regulations Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power). This means that if the roof decking (generally chipboard or plywood) underneath your existing roof covering needs replacing then we have to incorporate extra insulation. The amount will depend on any existing insulation and any structural limitations.. We will carry out all Uvalue and condensation risk analysis calculations to satisfy Building Regulations and local Building Control Officers. These regulations do not cover non-heated parts of the building like carports and garages. Exemptions If the area of roof being repaired is less than 25% of the total flat roof area. If it is not technically or practically possible to upgrade to the prescribed levels. In this case insulation levels should be increased to what is feasible. Where a simple payback cannot be achieved within 15 years.
